ganguro is a sub-subset of the 'gal' aka gyaru fashion movement amongst young Japanese ladies, usually under 20-25 years old, that started in and around 1990... ;) not long before Conan started printing. ,

ganguro actually is a smidge older than the gyaru fashion movement that it was 'absorbed by'. some fashionistas in Japan trace it to one specific EARLY 1970's ... ahem... AV! (adult video) actress who got a few 'average roles' after she starred in some 'popular spank films'. she was famous for her bleached hair and always having a beach dark 'full body tan' for her 'ahem ahem' scenes. ;9 she always wanted to be perfectly tan. all. over. ;9 for those scenes. i can NOT remember her name right now, it totally slips my mind.

like alot of gyaru, ganguro go for very sexy and WESTERN styles of clothes. they also like heavy, obvious, or flashy accessories, big earrings, lots of bracelets and necklaces. the hair accessories that general guyaru like are less often used by ganguro because they're so proud of their dye/bleach jobs. ganguro don't want to detract/distract too much with scrunchies/hairpins etc. from their hairstyles n colors. also... the name? is a literal Japanese mashup of the kanji for 'black/dark' and 'face'. yeah. the Japanese girls are wearing 'black-face'. heh! :>

unfortunately, tanning booths in the 70's through the 90's weren't kind to the 'guro' skin annnd they don't age well. sometimes turning into the 'leather hag guro' we see in anime as still 'screwing around' with saggy boobs, humping guys, getting groped, screaming as background mob characters, acting rude crude lewd and generally frowned upon by the 'normies' around them. modern 'guro' have the advantage of foundation makeup, self-tanning chemical products that don't require UV beds or sun worshipping, and mush mush mushhhh more advanced hair dyes and a 'ahem ahem' growing... in ;9 ;9 that way.... male appreciation for their 'charms'... heh! over the past near 50 years... heh!
